FAQ

  • What is tallow?

Rendered fat, typically derived from cattle or sheep. FLX Tallow sources suet from 100% grass-fed & grass-finished, pasture-raised cows locally to ensure the highest beneficial nutrient content.

  • What is the difference between grass-fed & grass-finished cows?

The key difference between grass-fed & grass-finished cows lies in their diet. Grass-fed cows start their life on a grass diet but may switch to grains or other feed later in life, usually in the last 30-90 days before harvest. 100% Grass-fed & grass-finished cows eat grass or forage for their entire life. They are never fed grains, making this diet more consistent & resulting in higher nutritional benefits (like more omega-3 fatty acids, CLA, & antioxidants). Additionally, 100% grass-fed & finished cattle are often raised on sustainable farms with better land management practices & in environments that allow them to graze freely, resulting in better overall animal welfare. FLX Tallow proudly sources 100% grass-fed & grass-finished, pasture raised cows for the highest quality tallow products & out of respect for the lives of the animals we work with. • What is the difference between suet and fat?

Suet is a specific type of fat found around the kidneys & loins of cattle or sheep. It is firmer, purer, & has a higher melting point compared to regular fat, which can come from various parts of the animal. Suet is also richer in nutrients like vitamins A, D, E, and K, making it ideal for rendering into tallow that's deeply nourishing & perfect for our skin.

  • What can I use it for?

Daily face/body moisturizer, dry/cracked skin, eczema, dermatitis, diaper rash, minor cuts/scrapes, reducing appearance of fine lines & wrinkles, improving skin elasticity, lip balm, make-up remover, after-sun care & so much more!

  • Is it greasy?

No! Tallow is compatible with the oil our skin naturally produces, so we are able to absorb it quickly while it nourishes deeply. It has anti-inflammatory & anti-microbial properties that help to prevent acne & breakouts. It is also noncomedogenic, meaning it will not clog pores. Additionally, we whip our balms, allowing it to absorb faster & spread easier. If your skin is not absorbing it, you are likely using too much! Try just a pea-size dab on clean skin.

  • Does tallow have a scent?

Tallow does have a gentle, natural, earthy scent (that many don't find offensive at all!). Rendering the suet to tallow reduces the scent & then we add other natural ingredients & essential oils to create a lovely, mild aroma.

  • Is tallow safe for babies, small children, pregnant or breastfeeding individuals?

Tallow is considered safe for babies, small children, pregnant & breastfeeding individuals, as well as all skin types, but it is always a good idea to consult with a pediatrician or healthcare provider before using any new skincare product. FLX Tallow was created in an attempt to find relief for our youngest son's eczema & we have used it on him since he was less than 1 year old. I also continue to use our tallow products daily while we continue our breastfeeding journey. We want you to feel safe using our products on yourself & your littles! We recommend our Tender Tallow Baby & Mama Balm on young babies, as there are no added essential oils. If I trust it for myself & my babies, you can trust it too 🫶

  • What is the shelf life?

We recommend using your product within 12 months of purchase. Because we use all natural, preservative-free ingredients, the shelf life is shorter than commercial products. Store in a cool, dark place or refrigerate to extend shelf life. If you notice any change in smell, color or texture it's best to discard.

  • Why does my tallow balm feel gritty?

Occasionally tallow balm may develop a slight gritty texture due to the natural crystallization of the fats. This is typically due to temperature changes & is common with natural products that do not contain synthetic stabilizers or emulsifiers. If the texture bothers you, try warming it up in your fingers or the palm of your hand before applying, this will melt the crystals and smooth it out. The quality or effectiveness of the balm will not change - it's still packed with nourishing benefits for your skin!

  • Why is my tallow balm soft or melted?

Tallow balm can sometimes soften or melt when exposed to high temperatures, especially during shipping or storage in warm environments. It has a relatively low melting point (meaning it could liquefy at warmer temps) & only contains natural ingredients without stabilizers, so it may melt more easily compared to synthetic products. The effectiveness & quality of the product will not be altered in this state! Feel free to place it in a cool place or refrigerate it to re-solidify.

  • Where are the Finger Lakes?

The Finger Lakes is a region located in New York State. It is centered around a group of long, narrow glacier-carved lakes that resemble fingers on a hand. The region is roughly between Syracuse & Rochester, extending from the southern shore of Lake Ontario to the Pennsylvania border. There are 11 major lakes in the Finger Lakes region, including Canandaigua Lake, Cayuga Lake, Seneca Lake, Keuka Lake, & Skaneateles, among others. Also known as FLX, Finger Lakes Country, Finger Lakes Wine Country, Finger Lakes Region.

"While the Finger Lakes region derives its name from the lakes that grace the land with their beauty & abundance of life, the area is compromised of so much more - from the recreation, wine & amazing history that truly makes this a fascinating place to explore." www.fingerlakes.org
